Famous Spanish restaurant El Bulli shuts, for now - Yahoo! News

ROSES, Spain (AP) — El Bulli, one of the world's most acclaimed and award-winning eateries, served its last supper Saturday.

On the final menu were 50 dishes with intriguing names like "Clam Meringue," ''Olive Spheres," and "Hot Cold Gin Fizz."

For more than half of the 24 years that virtuoso chef Ferran Adria has been in charge of its kitchen, the restaurant has maintained the almost unattainable Michelin three-star status and been rated the world's best restaurant five times by British magazine The Restaurant.

Growth anemic, debt fight poses recession risk - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy stumbled badly in the first half of 2011 and came dangerously close to contracting in the January-March period, raising the risk of a recession if a stand-off over the nation's debt does not end quickly.

The Commerce Department data on Friday also showed the current lull in the economy began earlier than had been thought, with the growth losing steam late last year.

That raised questions on the long held view by both Federal Reserve officials and independent economists that the slowdown in growth this year was mostly due to transitory factors.

James Murdoch faces BSkyB board, doubts about role - Yahoo! News

LONDON (Reuters) - James Murdoch looks set to survive a board meeting of BSkyB on Thursday even as questions multiply from other quarters over whether his role in a phone-hacking scandal leave him a fit chairman of the satellite broadcaster.

It will be the first meeting of the BSkyB board since the crisis forced News Corp to close the News of the World newspaper, drop a $12 billion bid for BSkyB and offer up James and his father Rupert to answer questions in the British parliament.

As well as being non-executive chairman and former chief executive of BSkyB, James Murdoch is deputy chief operating officer of News Corp, which owns 39 percent of BSkyB as well as the News of the World tabloid at the center of the furor.

"Jersey Shore" star reveals miscarriage - Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Former "Jersey Shore" star Angelina Pivarnick has revealed that she suffered a miscarriage -- and as far as she's concerned, the media bears a large part of the blame for the loss of her child-to-be.

Pivarnick appears on the August 4 episode of the recently launched syndicated show "Father Albert" to discuss the miscarriage, and tells the white-collared host that pressures created by the media played a part in ending the pregnancy.

Emma Stone offered lead female role in "Gangster Squad" - Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Warner Bros. has offered Emma Stone the role of Jean, a woman romantically attached to two men: the gangster Mickey Cohen and the police officer who is chasing him down, TheWrap has confirmed.

Sean Penn is playing Cohen. Ryan Gosling is playing Sgt. Jerry Wooters.

Josh Brolin and Michael Pena also star.

The movie is about Cohen, the Brooklyn-born gangster who was sent to Los Angeles by Meyer Lansky to keep an eye on Bugsy Siegel. Cohen became a mob kingpin himself in the 1940s, and at one point fired rounds from two .45-caliber handguns into the ceiling of the Hotel Roosevelt lobby.

"Gangster Squad" is based on a series of articles by Paul Lieberman. "L.A. Rex" author Will Beall wrote the script.

Ruben Fleischer is directing and Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick are producing.

BP fails to convince investors on strategy - Yahoo! News

LONDON (Reuters) - BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley's promise of strong long-term growth failed to convince investors concerned about the company's post oil-spill strategy.

A year after BP, Europe's second-largest oil company by market capitalization, staunched the massive leak at its Gulf of Mexico well, investors say Dudley has still not set the company on the road to recovery.

On Tuesday he sought to address that concern, saying deals to secure new reserves this year would help drive performance in 2012 and 2013. But some analysts were unimpressed.

Futures down on debt gridlock - Yahoo! News

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock index futures fell on Monday as political brinkmanship in Washington over the debt ceiling sparked fears of a U.S. rating downgrade, sending world equities lower and pushing gold to a record high.

A divided U.S. Congress pursued rival budget plans that appeared unlikely to win broad support, pushing the country closer to a debt default.

While analysts still expected a deal to raise the debt ceiling by August 2, the United States moved one step closer to losing its coveted triple-A credit rating as Democrats and Republicans seemed unlikely to agree on a deal.

"Torchwood" panelists talk leathers and fake accents - Yahoo! News

SAN DIEGO (TheWrap) - "Torchwood: Miracle Day" star John Barrowman said the series almost didn't return after its third installment -- but that he was insistent it should.

"You'd have to be stupid not to bring it back," Barrowman said Friday at a Comic-Con panel about the fourth installment of "Torchwood," the British-based sci-fi drama that left off with the miniseries "Torchwood: Children of the Earth."

The latest series arrived stateside on Starz on July 8 and finds Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness and Eve Myles' agent Gwen Cooper investigating a mysterious phenomenon that makes people suddenly stop dying.

Viggo Mortensen at home in first Argentine film - Yahoo! News

TIGRE, Argentina (Reuters) - Oscar-nominated actor Viggo Mortensen, best known as Aragorn in the "Lord of the Rings" films, says he never felt as comfortable as he does now while shooting his first Argentine film in the country where he was raised.

The Danish-American actor lived until age 11 in Argentina, where he learned fluent Spanish and developed a fanatical devotion to the San Lorenzo soccer club. He returns often to the South American country, where he says he feels at home.

"I've been in lots of shoots, more than 40 movies, but I've never felt this comfortable," Mortensen told Reuters on the set of his new film, "Todos Tenemos un Plan" ("Everybody has a Plan").

Can "Captain America" save the summer of the super hero? - Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) - Closing out the Summer of the Lesser-Known Super Hero, Paramount and Marvel will debut "Captain America: The First Avenger" in 3,715 theaters this weekend.

Tracking is solid for the Joe Johnston-directed 3D film, which stars Chris Evans in the title role and arrives with a reasonable-for-its-genre production budget of around $140 million.

Paramount officials are expecting a first-weekend gross somewhere between $55 million to $65 million -- roughly somewhere between where Fox's "X-Men: United" opened in early June ($55.1 million) and where the last Marvel/Paramount collaboration, "Thor," started in May ($65.7 million).
