First Look: Johnny Depp stars in 'Dark Shadows' - Yahoo! News

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Johnny Depp is portraying the undead in his latest movie.

With some fake blood on his lips, Depp bites into the role of a wronged vampire who awakens 200 years in the future to discover disco, television and microwaves in "Dark Shadows."

Depp and director Tim Burton presented footage from their remake of the 1960s TV show Tuesday at CinemaCon, a conference for theater owners in Las Vegas.

The preview shows Depp's character, Barnabas Collins, trying to get acquainted with his modern relatives, who live in his 18th century mansion. They include Michelle Pfeiffer and Chloe Moretz, who plays a bored teenager. An immortal witch portrayed by Eva Green threatens to destroy Collins' family if she can't have him.

Burton said as a boy, he used to race home from school to watch the show.

"I wasn't doing my homework. I was watching this weird TV show," he said.

Burton said he, Depp and Pfeiffer were the only people on set who watched the TV show when it aired from 1966 to 1971.

"Try to make sense of it," he said as the preview began.

Depp barely spoke as Burton introduced the movie. He appeared on stage looking like a modern Jack Sparrow, the free spirit he portrayed in Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise. He wore all black, a vest and an assortment of necklaces and bracelets.

The film begins in 1760 Liverpool, England, with the Collins family preparing to move to the New World.

After Green condemns him, Depp's vampire is found buried in his coffin by construction workers. He returns to his family home to find he is living in a different era. At one point, he challenges a neon McDonalds sign.

He vows to restore his family to its former glory, but Green's fatal attraction threatens to stand in the way.

"If I can't love you, I will destroy you and your family," the witch says.

Pfeiffer plays the family matriarch and Moretz is her daughter. Rocker Alice Cooper has a cameo. Depp declares Cooper "the ugliest women I've ever seen."

The movie is part of Warner Bros. summer lineup. It is slated to be released in May.

Johnny Depp on Jonathan Frid: "elegant and magical" - Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Johnny Depp paid tribute to his "Dark Shadows" predecessor Jonathan Frid on Thursday, telling the Los Angeles Times that the first time he met Frid was "elegant and magical."

Frid, who played vampire Barnabas Collins from 1967 to 1971 on the soap opera, died April 13 at the age of 87, though news of his death began to filter out on Thursday.

"Jonathan Frid was the reason I used to run home from school to watch ‘Dark Shadows,'" Depp told the paper. "His elegance and grace was an inspiration then and will continue to remain one forever more. When I had the honor to finally meet him... generously passed the torch of Barnabas."

Depp, who called Frid "a true original," plays Collins in the big-screen adaptation of "Dark Shadows," which hits theaters on May 11. Frid has a bit part in the film, as a party guest.

According to Depp, when he met Frid, the elder actor was " elegant and magical as I had always imagined."

"Pirates of the Caribbean" star Depp is currently filming "The Lone Ranger." Depp plays Tonto in the film, opposite Armie Hammer in the titular role.

"Dark Shadows" star Jonathan Frid dies at 87 - Yahoo! News

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Jonathan Frid, who played vampire Barnabas Collins on the cult classic TV show "Dark Shadows," has died. He was 87.

Frid died just weeks before the release of a feature film adaptation of the show starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton. His "Dark Shadows" co-star, Kathryn Leigh Scott, told TheWrap he died Friday - Friday the 13th, she wryly noted - and said his family had not wanted to release the news earlier.

She said he died in a hospital following a fall at his home near Toronto.

Frid and Scott, along with their castmates, traveled to England in July to shoot cameos for the film, which will be released May 11. During the filming, Frid met Depp, who is taking on the role of Barnabas.

"I think the most poignant moment was standing with Jonathan when we met Johnny Depp and Tim Burton," she said. "He gazed at Johnny Depp's makeup and said, 'I see you've given the hair a few more spikes.' And Johnny said, 'Yes, we're doing a few things differently."

Leonard Cohen thanks ex-manager for exposing guilt - Yahoo! News

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Leonard Cohen read an impassioned and sometimes funny statement in court Tuesday, during the sentencing of his former manager and onetime lover, Kelley Lynch.

Lynch was found guilty last week of breaching restraining orders and making scores of harassing emails and phone calls to the "I'm Your Man" singer.

She was sentenced to 18 months in prison, including alcohol and anger management programs and mental evaluations, with reports every three months on her progress.

At end of 18 months, she is to undergo a mental evaluation to determine what the next step will be for the remainder of her overall five-year sentence.

In his statement, Cohen thanked his tormentor... for exposing her thievery through the trial.

Schwarzenegger calls last "Terminator" awful - Yahoo! News

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Arnold Schwarzennegger says "Terminator Salvation" was "awful," Collider reports.

The former Governator seems to have displayed Terminator-like diplomacy in his assessment of the only "Terminator" film in which he didn't star. The site asked if he would consider sequels to his past films.

" all those things, if it's 'True Lies,' 'Terminator,' a well-made 'Terminator' ... the last one was awful," he was quoted as saying. "It tried hard, not that they didn't try, the acting and everything. It missed the boat."

A fifth "Terminator" film is in development. The 2009 film "Salvation," directed by McG, starred Christian Bale and Sam Worthingon.

Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures acquired rights to the "Terminator" franchise after a bidding war at last year's Cannes Film Festival. If the project doesn't go into production by 2018, rights revert to James Cameron, who wrote and directed the first two "Terminator" films.

Representatives for Schwarzenegger did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Ashton Kutcher might be a big-shot "Two and a Half Men" star these days, but he's not abandoning his roots.

Kutcher will join his fellow former "That '70s Show" co-stars Mila Kunis, Laura Prepon and Wilmer Valderrama for a cast reunion on "Fox's 25th Anniversary Special," airing Sunday, April 22 at 8 p.m.

The cast members of the show -- which ran from 1998 to 2006 on Fox -- will "remember their earliest break into stardom and growing up on set," according to Fox.

Also getting back together for the anniversary spectacular: Keenen Ivory Wayans, Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans, from Fox's early '90s sketch comedy "In Living Color." The comedically inclined Wayans brothers will "come together to share stories about their funniest sketches on 'In Living Color,'" Fox said.

In addition to the reunion, Fox is reviving "In Living Color" in the form of two half-hour specials.

As previously reported, cast members from former Fox series "Married With Children," "The X-Files" and "Beverly Hills, 90210" are also reuniting for the two-hour special.

Alec Baldwin blasts NY paper for photos of fiancee - Yahoo! News

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Alec Baldwin has stepped into the New York tabloid wars, excoriating two New York Daily News reporters for showing up at his yoga class to take photos of his fiancée.

News leaked on Monday that Baldwin proposed to his girlfriend and yoga teacher, Hilaria Thomas, over the weekend. The 28-year old native of Spain is co-owner of the Yoga Vida studio in New York.

Two Daily News reporters, Simone Weichselbaum and Enid Alvarez, showed up at the studio on Monday, prompting Baldwin to go on one of his daily Twitter rants.

"Shame on the no-talent trash from the Daily News for invading the privacy of 75 people in a yoga class to take a picture of someone," the "30 Rock" star tweeted.

Then he added, "In NYC, it's common knowledge that the News is trying to give the Post a run for its $ in the slime dept. Clearly, they're succeeding."

There has been a rash of recent stories about a truce between the Daily News and the Post, two of the most popular dailies in the nation. One former Daily News editor, Martin Dunn, ripped his former paper for its timidity.

Maybe Baldwin can get them going again, though his mind appears to have already turned to Rupert Murdoch. Once again, Baldwin disparaged the News Corp. CEO, saying he is "rotten" and demanding that former lieutenant Rebekah Brooks be put in prison.
